The era of polite deference toward Brussels must end. Jerusalem holds real technological, intelligence, and economic leverage that it must begin using.
Ending the Era of Diplomatic Kid Gloves
The time has come for Israel to stop playing the polite partner in what’s become a genuinely toxic relationship and start pushing back hard against Europe. For too long, Israel has absorbed endless lectures, hypocritical embargoes, and institutional hostility from Brussels and various European capitals while keeping up a business as usual posture that just rewards bad behavior. European leaders routinely weaponize international law, fund partisan NGOs to meddle in Israeli domestic policy, and push punitive measures dressed up as human rights concerns. Israel holds real technological, intelligence, and economic leverage here, yet Jerusalem keeps treating self righteous European bureaucrats with diplomatic kid gloves. That era of polite deference needs to end now.
Exposing European Double Standards
Look at the blatant hypocrisy running through contemporary European policy toward Israel. While European capitals lecture Israel on military proportionality and humanitarian compliance during an existential multi front war against Iranian proxies, they’re simultaneously dealing with a catastrophic spike in violent domestic antisemitism that their own open border policies and institutional cowardice helped fuel. Jewish communities across France, Germany, Belgium, and beyond face daily harassment, arson attacks, and physical intimidation, yet European institutions offer little more than empty statements and toothless declarations in response. Brussels spends its time scrutinizing Israeli self defense operations while turning a blind eye to the moral rot spreading inside its own major cities. Israel has every right to call out this rank hypocrisy on the world stage without hedging or softening the language.
Leveraging Economic and Technological Power
The economic and technological relationship here heavily favors Europe too, something Israeli policymakers have historically underused as a tool of statecraft. The EU remains Israel’s largest trading partner, and Israeli scientific talent drives huge parts of the continent’s high tech and research ecosystem through programs like Horizon Europe. Yet European member states keep threatening trade restrictions, pushing product labeling schemes targeting Judea and Samaria, and debating suspending the Association Agreement whenever local political winds demand a gesture to appease radical domestic constituencies. Israel needs to flip the script here. Jerusalem should actively review its participation in joint scientific ventures, reevaluate regulatory alignment, and make clear that technological cooperation runs both ways, and can be turned off just as easily as it was turned on in the first place. If European leaders want to treat Israel like a diplomatic pariah, they shouldn’t get to keep unfettered, frictionless access to Israeli innovation and cyber intelligence at the same time.

Countering Foreign Interference in Domestic Sovereignty
Israel also needs to take a much harder line against European diplomatic interference inside its own sovereign borders. European consulates and embassies frequently fund and coordinate political activism aimed at delegitimizing the Israeli judiciary, undermining military governance, and subverting democratic election outcomes. No sovereign nation would tolerate foreign governments channeling millions of euros into domestic political agitation dressed up as human rights work. Israel should expel foreign operatives caught crossing diplomatic red lines, impose strict transparency requirements on foreign state funding for domestic NGOs, and publicly call out European diplomats who behave more like colonial governors than accredited guests. Respect gets earned through reciprocity, not by bowing to foreign capitals that treat Israeli security needs as an inconvenience to be managed.
Pivoting Academic and Cultural Partnerships
The cultural and academic arena demands an equally firm response. Israeli universities, researchers, and cultural figures face growing academic boycotts, blacklists, and institutional exclusion across Europe, often quietly enabled by university administrations hiding behind academic freedom while silencing pro Israel voices at the same time. Israeli institutions should immediately pause cooperative programs with European universities that fail to protect Jewish and Israeli students from targeted harassment. If European campuses choose to become hostile ground for Israelis, our brightest minds and institutions should pivot toward partnerships in North America, Asia, and the Global South instead, where mutual respect and shared strategic interests still carry real weight.
Pushing Back Against Multilateral Lawfare
This assertive approach needs to extend into international law and multilateral diplomacy too. For decades, European states have used bodies like the UN, the International Court of Justice, and the International Criminal Court to wage lawfare against Israel, providing diplomatic cover and financial backing to organizations dedicated to undermining Israel’s sovereign right to self defense. Jerusalem needs to systematically cut off cooperation with any European funded body or international envoy actively participating in delegitimizing Israeli military action or promoting biased legal proceedings. Israel is a sovereign nation fighting a genuine war for physical survival against genocidal actors, and it doesn’t owe explanations to bureaucrats sitting safely in European capitals who’ve never had rockets fall on their cities or terrorists breach their borders.
Overcoming Cultural Subservience
There’s also a deep psychological contradiction worth confronting here, where Israelis keep consuming European culture, seeking European passports, and joining European academic programs while genuinely resenting European political hostility toward them. This cultural pull has historically crippled Israeli diplomacy, creating a false impression that Jerusalem needs to swallow insults just to stay part of the Western club. In reality, Europe needs Israeli cybersecurity, intelligence on radical Islamist networks, and technological innovation a lot more than Israel needs European moralizing. By shifting from a defensive crouch to a genuinely offensive diplomatic posture, Israel can fundamentally rebalance this lopsided relationship.
A Rebalanced Strategic Calculus
Israel is a victorious, sovereign nation that doesn’t need permission from sanctimonious European prime ministers to protect its own citizens. Going hard against Europe means abandoning the outdated mindset that Jerusalem has to endure abuse in exchange for trade concessions. It means standing tall, flexing real technological and strategic muscle, and making it abundantly clear that economic partnerships and intelligence sharing require basic diplomatic respect in return. If European leaders want a real relationship with Israel, they need to learn that the days of treating the Jewish state as a diplomatic punching bag are permanently over.
