Israel has recorded its first-ever case of hantavirus, involving a traveler who recently returned from Eastern Europe.

According to a report by Maariv on Thursday, the patient sought medical help months after their trip after experiencing symptoms associated with the rare virus.

Health officials have kept details regarding the patient’s identity and location private. Initial antibody screenings suggested exposure, and a follow-up PCR test confirmed the infection.

Unlike the aggressive Andes strain recently linked to a cruise ship in South America, this case involves a European variant. The patient is currently stable, monitored by medical staff, and has not required intensive care or isolation.

The incident has been reported to the Health Ministry as officials continue to track the situation.
